For my project, I started off with the general aim of discovering the consumer behavior of college students in regards to using music streaming services. After much consideration and meeting with Professor Sinnreich, as a fellow colleague suggested, I have made strides in narrowing my topic. Instead of approaching the project through a market research stand point, I will be approaching it through a more social media focused and promotional perspective since that is the direction that I intend on obtaining a career in. My new audience will be record labels, executives of music streaming services and other music companies. The new aim of my project is to compile a comprehensive report that informs them on essential data that they didn’t previously know about their consumer’s sharing habits on music streaming services.
Going on Professor Sanchez’s suggestion, I searched articles, blog posts and hash tags for people’s opinion on music streaming services in order to get a better grasp on the criticisms of the services. On one website, I found the chart below that compares the features of all the popular music streaming services. It is evident that each program has a social network feature.

In this article on the best music streaming service from The Sweet Setup, the author, Tyler Hayes, names Rdio as the champion. Hayes goes on to state that Rdio’s social media set up makes it “as if you’re listening to music with your friends”. On Rdio you can see what your friends have or are currently listening to in order to discover new music or affirm the “coolness” of your music selection.
